The 1962 Union Grove Fiddler’s Convention

The Old Timers at the Union Grove school gymnasium,

I try to catalogue interesting things I find and this is one that recently made it’s way into my hands from Pennsylvania.

This is a CD, which is odd first of all because the original recordings from the Fiddle Festival were released on vinyl. And while there have been modern pressings of those albums on CD, this doesn’t seem to be one of them. For one, the tracks included are not the entirety of the original album. I don’t know if this was someone’s personal mix or an attempt at creating a recording to sell, but it’s not a legitimate product. The front and back plates are clearly from a home printer and the disk front is also the same.

At any rate, I’ve decided to rip and archive the album as an oddity. If you’d like to listen to it, it’s been uploaded to my Internet Archive account for download and I’ll embed it here as well.

Best string band that year went to the Brushy Mountain Boys, and one can hear why. Here’s the band in (likely) the 1970’s playing the same song on this album.
