In Memoriam

With gratitude to those who bled
I scrub the stone and sweat
I feel the name in marble etched
A boy who ran towards death

This farmer, soldier, son, and child
Who fell in Europe’s mud
Refreshed the tree of liberty
By sprinkling with blood

Remembering Thomas Boyd Speaks this Memorial Day. Rest easy, soldier.
This we’ll defend.

A gravestone marked 'Thomas E. Speaks, North Carolina, 118th Inf Div, October 4, 1938' with an American flag draped over it, set on a grassy area.
