2026 marks a milestone for veterans of Desert Storm and family members. A memorial will finally be erected in Washington, DC and opened to the public in October. While it will honor those who gave their lives, individual names will not be included on the monument, and so I wanted to include those related to the 82nd I could find here.

While not part of the 82nd Airborne, the 27th Engineer battalion was attached to the XVIII Airborne Corp. Thier main mission was mine clearance in support of the initial invasion as American and French forces pushed into Iraq. Later it became thier job to deal with UXO, both American and Iraqi. On February 26th while attempting to clear an American cluster bomb from the airfield at As Salman, 7 members died in an explosion. It represents the single greatest loss of life for the XVIII Corp during the war.
In addition, the battalion also suffered 3 non-combat casualties.

My sincere thanks to RetrowaveJoe on Reddit for physically visiting the Memorial on Essayons Drive at Fort Bragg and collecting the names I could not find. It’s surprisingly hard to find casualties and KIA from the conflict since there’s no single source for that information.
