Today’s photo of the day is really several. On a quick trip through the county I made a stop at Hunting Creek Friend’s Meeting in Hamptonville, a small church that I’ve found some old pictures of researching another story. It’s a fascinating little church with an interesting style to it’s steeple that I haven’t seen inContinue reading “Photo of the Day +”

Photo of The Day: Templeton House
This old beauty has sit empty for a number of years. More recently, the property behind it was cut for timber. The house still remains, but it’s future is uncertain.
The Money Place: Reading The Landscape
It’s not often you have the kind of unfettered access to a location like I have had with the Money Place, and as a result, I have tried various means to really understand the property and its story. This includes standard genealogical research, property records, aerial photos, and even metal detecting.Today though I want toContinue reading “The Money Place: Reading The Landscape”
The Triangle House
This modest little home seems to have been given up on some time in the late 70’s or early 80’s. All of the magazines, newspapers, catalogues, and other ephemera that litters the floor of the place are from that time period. It almost seems like there might have been a fire or else a very inefficientContinue reading “The Triangle House”
The Preaching Arbor
I know some of the history of this place, but because of it’s location and the vulnerability of it, I’m choosing to keep most of it to myself. However, what I can tell you is that this is an old preaching arbor that was active at least as early as 1932, but I have also foundContinue reading “The Preaching Arbor”
The White Pine Club
I haven’t been able to find much about this place in the newspaper archives. I do know the McGee opened it originally in 1946, I don’t know how many times it might have closed, reopened, or been renamed either, but I do know it became “Johnny Mac’s White Pine Club” in about 2003 and wasContinue reading “The White Pine Club”
Photo of the Day: The Two Towers
Not far down the road from Houstonville are the remains of this old home, which based on the chimneys, must have been very large. There was also a small store on the same property that sat along the road but it was demolished several years ago.
Photo of The Day: House By The River
My grandparents lived here briefly in the late 80’s, and I vaguely remember the inside of the house. I don’t know when the owner or owners finally gave up on it, but it was sometime after they paid for a new roof.
Photo of the Day: The Old Myers Farm
I believe this farm was the former homeplace of a Myers family. It’s off the beaten path and these days is part of a cow field along with the barn that also sits on the property.
Photo of the Day: The Fort
I found this in some of my old files. I think it’s Fort Fisher at Kure Beach.
